Fishing

"Nothing could have been better, from the accommodations, to the scenery, to the fishing, the food, and on and on!" -- Don Asel, Columbia, Missouri

What makes the northwest end of Alaska's Kodiak island such a great fishing area? The protected water between Kodiak, Afognak, and Raspberry islands holds some of the richest biomass in the world. The plankton growth often makes the crystal clear water appear like a rich broth and it attracts everything from tiny fish to great humpback whales. Fish and sea mammals alike hold here in the tidal waters between these islands because of the unending supply of food. Salt-water fish migrate here to feed and grow. King salmon are here all year long and silver salmon feed in the salt water all summer as they travel to their spawning grounds. Add to this the large number of sparkling streams that each have their own unique salmon and steelhead spawning beds and you have one of the best sportfishing areas in the world.  It's also one of the best places around for an Alaska fishing lodge!

This 347 pound halibut is the current lodge record because we kept it. We have released larger fish.

A happy king salmon fisherman."My annual trip to Kodiak and to Port Lions Lodge is the highlight of my year." -- Pete Karns, Jackson Hole, Wyoming

Our season starts in May with the influx of spawning herring followed by giant king salmon and halibut. (See the site map for information on trophy kings). We fish exclusively out of the boat in May. Shore excursions are added in June to fly fish for sockeye salmon. As the summer goes on we catch fewer of the giant kings but the numbers of the smaller ones goes up. July adds another opportunity as the silvers start to show up in the saltwater. A typical July day can result in a mixed bag of kings, silvers, and halibut from the ocean as well as some pink salmon and dolly varden trout from the streams. In August we start catching the silvers in the streams and rivers. They run right through September. The late summer fishing is great in both the ocean and the streams.

We suggest taking out trip insurance to cover unforeseen late cancellations. It covers emergencies while on your trip also.

We think it is a good deal.

It's hard to beat the pleaure of catching fish like this! Our new ocean going catamarans are the pride of the fleet. They have lots of deck space for chasing big fish around the boat. And they have plenty of cabin room to protect you from the weather. There is a fully enclosed toilet room for privacy. The twin Yamaha four stroke outboards provide fast, quiet transportation as well as efficient trolling.

In order to increase the quality of your experience we try to limit our boats to four fishermen each. Most lodges and charter boats in our area cater to six. We can fish five or six to a boat if your situation calls for that. Our boats are equipped with state-of-the-art marine electronics. Fishing gear is updated and carefully maintained. Guides are coast guard licensed and approved with years of experience in safe seamanship and fishing techniques.

NOW: specific trips for whale watching!

Port Lions Lodge boasts the best two boat fleet on Kodiak Island. The "Lara Beth" and the "Rachel" are both 30 foot catamarans with full cabins and lots of deck
space. And we only fish four to a boat!

Salmon fishing results just off Kodiak island, Alaska"Thank you again for such a wonderful time. The fishing only gets better and better." - Steve OeDell, Molalla, Oregon

The coho is the most outstanding fighter of the salmon species. These super-charged silver salmon explode out of the water and make reel-screaming runs up and down the stream. When caught in salt water they often strip light tackle of all the line on the spool. We have access to dozens of silver salmon streams, bays and coves. Depending upon conditions, we fish from boats, stream banks, gravel bars, or even wading in salt water. We access these hot spots in modern, comfortable, ocean-going boats that get us to secluded sites quickly and safely. We often fish wilderness sites without human competition. The best silver fishing is in August and September but we often catch silvers and kings by trolling in salt water in June and July.

Halibut are plentiful near Port Lions lodge]"Thanks so much for a wonderful wilderness experience and life experience as well. There will be many fond memories to cherish in the years ahead." -- Ralph Gabarro, Dover, New Hampshire

Halibut fishing is good all summer long. We travel only a few minutes away from the dock to great halibut water. Our clients are extremely successful and always take home plenty of the tasty white meat. These monstrous lunkers hit lures and bait readily, then use tremendous strength to flee from the boat. This is exciting salt water big game sport fishing.
